Not all had been well for the common people who had rallied to the ‘cause’. A promise of an everlasting life in Heaven was incentive enough but life here on Earth still proved arduous and in many cases deadly. Food was scarce – many were reduced to consuming roots and rats and even each other. Dysentery, sepsis and death due to the blistering sun decimated a large percentage of the crusaders.

Nevertheless the Church had achieved its goal. The Holy City was once again in the hands of the Christians. Before and since then warring factions have vied to possess the land that Jesus Christ walked upon.
